In 2023, the art world witnessed a significant milestone as sales of art by women soared to a new high of US$825.8 million. This figure represents a 7% increase from the preceding year and accounts for 13.8% of all sales at top auction houses, marking a notable rise from 9.4% in 2022. Such statistics signal a promising shift toward gender parity in the art market, albeit the existing disparities in sales and average prices between artworks by men and women. The average price for a piece by a female artist stood at US$215,776, in contrast to US$298,520 for their male counterparts, thus narrowing the gap from 81% a year ago to 37%.

Breaking Records and Bridging Gaps

ArtTactic’s third annual report sheds light on the evolving landscape of the art market, emphasizing the stronger performance of women artists in the auction scene amidst a weaker global art market in 2023. Ultra-contemporary female artists, those under 30 years of age, emerged as powerhouses, accounting for nearly 70% of sales in their category and fetching higher prices than their male counterparts. Jadé Fadojutimi and Michaela Yearwood-Dan stood out among the top ultra-contemporary women artists, illustrating the growing recognition and valuation of works by young female talents. Furthermore, post-war women artists, born between 1910 and 1929, also saw robust sales, with icons like Yayoi Kusama and Louise Bourgeois leading the charge. Notably, Bourgeois set an auction record with a sale of US$30 million, underscoring the increasing market appreciation for female artists’ contributions to art history.

Despite these gains, young contemporary female artists, aged 30 to 45, experienced a slight dip in market share compared to the previous year. However, their representation has significantly grown since 2018, indicating a gradual shift in the art market’s dynamics. This segment’s slight contraction juxtaposes the overall trend of increasing sales and market share for women artists, highlighting the complexity of the art market and the varying trajectories of artists at different stages of their careers.

The Future of Female Artists in the Art Market

The trend towards narrowing the gender gap in the art market is an encouraging sign of progress, yet the journey towards full parity remains ongoing. The record-breaking sales and achievements of women artists in 2023 not only celebrate their talents and contributions but also spotlight the systemic challenges that have historically marginalized female voices in the art world. As the market continues to evolve, the sustained growth and recognition of women artists will be pivotal in reshaping the art landscape, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all creators.

The remarkable achievements of women in the art market in 2023 exemplify the potential for change and the importance of continued advocacy and support for gender parity in all creative fields. With each record broken and each barrier dismantled, the art world moves closer to a future where talent is the sole criterion for success, irrespective of gender.
