3 area artists among Indiana women to have work displayed in government offices in 2024

Three area creators are among the 2024 Hoosier Women Artists honorees who will have their work displayed in Indianapolis this year.

“Sacred Souls/Golden Peacocks” by Hilarie Couture of Fort Wayne and “On The Hook” by Sally R. Baldwin of Howe will hang in the office of Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “The Unraveling” by Jil Weikart of Fort Wayne will hang in the office of Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush.

The women were announced in a celebration Feb. 1 at the Statehouse.

“As public officials, we are blessed to work in this stunning building every day,” Crouch says in a news release. “But the opportunity to display the art of Indiana’s outstanding female artists makes it somehow even more beautiful. I am very proud to have played a role in giving a platform to these talented Hoosier women the past eight years.”

The Hoosier Women Artists program began in 2008 to showcase the work of female-identifying artists in Indiana. Participants this year are awarded a $125 honorarium for the first time.

More than 160 pieces were submitted and 29 were selected. In addition to the offices of Crouch and Rush, pieces will be displayed in the offices of first lady Janet Holcomb, Secretary of Education Katie Jenner, Comptroller Elise Nieshalla and Health Commissioner Lindsay Weaver.

Pieces were scored by a panel of three judges: Susannah Koerber, Chief Curator and Research Officer of Indiana State Museum; Danicia Malone, Founder and Director of Rokh Research and Design Studio; and Robin Ligon Williams, Artistic Director and Curator of Nola World Music and Artwerks.
