6-year-old boy sells paintings to support firefighters

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH)—Krishnum Ambal turned six this month and celebrated his special day by selling his artwork to his friends and family at his birthday party. When his mom, Moumita Kundu, asked Krisham why he wanted to sell his artwork, he told her he wanted to donate the money to firefighters.

“I was so amazed that he could think of something like that, think of donating it and giving it back to the community,” said Kundu. “It means a lot to me that he’s thinking that way.”

His mom says Krishnum loves experimenting with art and has been fascinated with firefighters since he was two years old. His Halloween costume for the last three years: a firefighter. Kundu says her son told her that he loves firefighters because they visit his school and teach him about fire safety.

He worked on the paintings throughout March and aimed to raise $100. His mom says he asked her if he could take time off of other activities to work on his art and raise money to meet his goal. And not only did he meet his goal, he exceeded it. With the help of family and friends, Krisham sold each painting for $3, raising $120 to donate to the Wichita Fire Department.

“At that age, to think of us firemen in that sense, it really makes us happy,” said Wichita firefighter Chad McKernan. “Anytime we see a kid with a lemonade stand, we try to stop and buy lemonade, you know, do little things like that, but we wouldn’t think that they would go out of their way to do something nice like this for us.”

The firefighters receiving the donation were all smiles and gladly brought Krisham aboard a firetruck, answering all his questions and taking him for the ride of his life.
