Weekend fun on Staten Island: International Women’s Day events, free art exhibit and more

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — This weekend offers a blend of inspiring events –celebrate International Women’s Day through thought-provoking talks and activities, immerse yourself in an art exhibition that celebrates vitality and appreciation, and more.

Friday

Kenshō [seeing nature] & Mudita [sympathetic joy] / March 7, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

This long-running exhibit has evolved with the seasons. As spring emerges from winter’s cold, some pieces have been replaced with paintings and drawings of the park’s flora and local gardens. The artist, Vince Serecin, will continue adding new work until the exhibition concludes in April.

Muditā, a Sanskrit term for “joy” or “pleasure,” describes the happiness found in witnessing others’ well-being. Like a parent’s satisfaction in a child’s growth, this joy, as the artist describes, is not limited to sentient beings but also exists in the relationship between humans and flowers — an exchange of vitality and appreciation.
