Former art student finds creativity also applies in business world

Chant Engineering Company, a global leader in testing and manufacturing machinery, located in New Britain, recently celebrated 55 years of engineering excellence. The company’s legacy of innovation, quality, and family-driven leadership harks back to 1959 when a young British engineer, Leonard James (Jim) Chant, his wife, and three sons immigrated to the United States. Eleven years later, Jim Chant founded L. J. Chant Associates in his basement.

Phil Chant, Jim’s fourth son, joined the company as a full-time employee in 1985. Before that, he attended Bucks County Community College and got a degree in Fine Art, after which, he was accepted at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and majored in Industrial Design. “I figured it was something I could make a living at instead of just the art world.”
