
Guwahati: Noted Assamese composer Lakshyahira Das passed away on Saturday at the age of 94 years due to age-related ailments.
A former professor at erstwhile Cotton College, she was the first woman artist to receive All India Radio’s recognition as a lyricist, composer and singer in 1948 during her college years.
Her artistic legacy includes over 2,000 musical compositions and lyrics for numerous prominent vocalists. Throughout her career, she also performed as a singer for various musical pieces.
Her literary contributions encompass more than 50 publications, spanning genres such as poetry, children’s literature, short stories, translations and educational works.
The state govt and various socio-cultural organisations honoured her with multiple accolades.
She held memberships in prestigious institutions, including the Sahitya Akademi, Authors Guild of India, Poetry Society of India and Asam Sahitya Sabha.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged her significant role in enhancing the state’s cultural and literary heritage.
“She worked tirelessly for the empowerment of women and her works will inspire generations to come. My thoughts are with her family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” Sarma posted on X.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the revered artist, educator, and distinguished writer, Dr Lakhyahira Das Baideu (elder sister), whose heartfelt voice mesmerised countless listeners, including myself. Baideu’s invaluable contribution to Assam’s cultural and educational fields will always be remembered. In this moment of grief, I extend my deepest condolences to her bereaved family and admirers, and I pray for the eternal peace of her departed soul.”
