TULSA, Okla. — The fourth annual Mvskoke Art Market is featuring over 95 artists this weekend at the River Spirit Casino.
One artist at this year’s market is pointillist artist Starr Hardridge. He explained pointillist paintings can trick the eye.
“[It] gives the impression of a beaded surface. A lot of people think it’s needlepoint or something that’s woven. I think the point is to fool the eye and take the paint out of the context of the brush.”
This is Hadridge’s third year attending the Mvskoke Art Market and his second year winning Best in Show.
This year his award winning piece is named Peaceful Sunrise.
“[It] features these two sacred egret white crane birds. The painting represents unity and peace and balance and harmony.”
He said part of the inspiration for his paintings comes from being a twin.
“There’s a lot of twin imagery in my artwork. Having that symmetry gives me a feeling of balance and gives a strength to the work.”
Peaceful Sunrise took 200 hours of work over a span of four weeks to create. Hardridge said the work was all done by a needle.
“There’s 700 billion dots on this canvas. It’s a pretty big canvas, it’s 48 inches by 36 inches, and it’s completely covered in 1/16th of an inch colored dots that are applied one by one through a needle. I don’t use a brush.”
He said his goal is to motivate other artists.
“I have a great amount of gratitude to the Muscogee Nation and I hope the peace inspires artists to raise their bar and strive for excellence in their hearts.”
The art market will continue into Sunday at River Spirit Casino from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
