NEW ORLEANS — As the second weekend of Jazz Fest kicks off, music lovers have a unique opportunity to own a piece of New Orleans history.
Papa Mali, a musician with a career spanning over 50 years, is offering a collection of his memorabilia for sale at The Occasional Wife on Magazine Street.
“These are some of the things that I have to show for it,” Papa Mali said, “I finally decided to let some of it go.”
The collection includes records, CDs, instruments, and art gathered from his travels around the world.
Fans can find items from his bands, The Killer Bees and Seven Walkers, along with mementos from other artists, including a signed poster from blues legend B.B. King.
“It’s kind of cool, it’s like hey this is my life, great memories, but you know, it’s been sitting in a storage unit for quite a while, a lot of it has anyway,” Papa Mali said.
Papa Mali said he started collecting at a young age.
“Some would almost say that I was a hoarder,” Papa Mali said.
Vanessa Niemann, project manager at The Occasional Wife, known for its estate sales, saw the perfect opportunity during Jazz Fest.
“I said, why don’t we just do something during Jazz Fest? We can do it offsite, not at the storage unit obviously, so we sent a team to go through some things,” Niemann said.
Papa Mali himself performed for shoppers at the store on Wednesday evening, surrounded by his collection.
The sale runs through the weekend at The Occasional Wife’s Magazine Street location.
