The exhibit “Women Artists: Works in the Collection” opens with an open house from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, and continues through Sept. 20 at the Elkhart County Historical Museum, 304 W. Vistula St., Bristol.
The exhibit includes works from 17 women artists in the Elkhart County Historical Society’s collection that cover a range of styles and materials.
According to a press release, some artists included in the exhibit will be familiar, such as painters Emma Schrock and Harriet Montieth, while other names may be new to visitors, such as quilter Ruth Bussler, who was a resident of the County Home, or student artist Beth Mayberry.
“Women Artists: Works in the Collection” builds on the national campaign #5womenartists, which challenges people to name five artists who are women.
The opening reception includes gallery chats, an art station for making a greeting card and light refreshments.
At 1 p.m. May 22, Claudia Hedeen, cultural education coordinator for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, will present “Myaamia Ribbonwork: Picking up the Threads.” This program includes a hands-on craft and will delve into the historical and cultural significance of Myaamia ribbonwork, a traditional art form practiced by Miami women for centuries.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Admission is free.
