Cumberland-based business brings together art and air filtration

From small home accent pieces to sprawling floor to ceiling creations, Moss Pure brings a whole new meaning to living art.

“These are not just beautiful living pieces of art, they are also certified air filters,” founder Jamie Mitri began.

Utilizing science to create a filtration system that triggers a biochemical reaction in living moss, unlike other home plant décor options, Moss Pure requires no regular upkeep.

“It’s keeping itself alive by bringing in moisture and pollutants from the air,” Mitri explained. “So not only is it keeping itself alive and lasting but it’s also becoming an effective air filter, helping out your space as well.”

A proud University of Rhode Island grad who obtained both her chemical engineering and biology degrees from the Kingston Campus, Mitri said she came up with the Moss Pure concept in 2020 as part of a science start-up competition at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“It’s just crazy that a little engineer from Rhode Island figured it out ,” she continued. “But it took me over a year to develop the product with MIT and the UN.”

Since then, Moss Pure has been growing in notoriety.

Earning several innovation awards and receiving hundreds of orders from across the country, Mitri assures the business will remain based out of Rhode Island but admits she will soon be outgrowing her current garage workspace.

Gov. Dan McKee and Secretary of Commerce Liz Tanner visited the unassuming workshop Friday afternoon.

Unveiling plans for the company’s latest endeavor, Mitri discussed utilizing her moss technology, to create a natural alternative to artificial turf fields.
