BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Hannah Ryden flipped from one vibrant drawing to another as she skimmed through her sister’s sketchbook on Tuesday afternoon.
Some pieces are complete. Others remain unfinished. Nonetheless, each illustration glows with the same radiance that those who knew her best say Danielle Warren carried in her life.
“She was an amazing, beautiful soul. Everyone loved Danielle,” Ryden said. “Everyone loved her.”
Warren, 32, was killed on May 7. Jason Philip Filas, 48, was charged with second-degree intentional murder in connection to the fatal stabbing. According to Violence Free Minnesota, Warren is Minnesota’s sixth confirmed victim of intimate partner homicide in 2025. Since her death, the total has risen to seven.
Warren’s family is now left to grapple with the loss of a woman they say was loved by so many. Ryden said her big sister carried a great sense of humor and was loving, caring and a nurturer to everyone around her.
“She did not deserve anything that happened to her whatsoever,” Ryden said. “I can’t imagine life without her right now, but she was amazing. I want them to remember her by how she was as a mom and as a person.”
Warren leaves behind three children, ages 10, 5 and 9 months. “She was the type of person that cares about people more than she cares about herself, especially her kids,” Ryden said.
The children are now at the heart of Ryden’s grief—and her strength. “My oldest nephew told me, he said, ‘Happy Mother’s Day, auntie Hannah, since you’re kind of like our mom now,’ and I literally started bawling my eyes out.”
For Ryden, the days ahead will be difficult as she grapples with the loss of her sister and best friend. “We were like what people would say a soul mate, best friends. She was like the other half. We would literally say the same words at the same time.”
An online fundraiser will support the children and family during this time of loss. Loved ones and community members continue to sign a large painting dedicated to Warren and her children—a canvas of collective grief and love.
“The whole community is signing this right now,” Ryden said. “This has only been out here for 24 hours.”
As she learns to live without her sister by her side, Ryden said she knows Warren’s radiant soul will live on.
