Art Farm set to close May 31
DECATUR — The eclectic gift store, Art Farm, is preparing close its doors.
The final opening day for the shop at 252 N. Park St., north of Central Park, will be Saturday, May 31.
The store’s owner, Peggy Baity, blames the closure on the current retail atmosphere.
“It’s a combination of the times,” she said. “We’re not necessarily a necessity.”
Sales at the store, known for artistic gifts and homemade items including lamps, clothing and accessories, have not recovered from the drop in brick-and-mortar retail sales.
“Our foot traffic increases exponentially,” Baity said. “That’s the worst part.”
The customers aren’t able spend as much money on the colorful items offered at the Art Farm, Baity observed.

“Our foot traffic increases daily, weekly, but I feel like the times have failed us,” she said. “We haven’t failed at all. We’re at the top of our game.”
To celebrate the store and the artists that contributed to its success, Baity will be hosting the annual street festival on June 28.
“I have a month to deconstruct the store,” she said. “The 28th of June is two days before I hand over the keys.”
Hosting the street festival will have a different atmosphere for Baity. “It’s about celebrating our successes and not making money,” she said.
Artists, bands and food trucks will be part of the party. “This is going to be doozy,” Baity said. “We haven’t failed. And we need to celebrate that.”
For now, the Art Farm will continue to host sales. “There are only seven million pieces of inventory left,” Baity said. “So come get it.”
