If you started your Saturday morning by checking your activity on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, you got a surprise: the site was down for many thousands of users.

There were more than 26,000 incidents of people reporting issues with the social media platform as of about 9:30 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources.

Reports began coming in to the outage tracking site regarding X at about 8:21 a.m. Most users reporting issues were using the X app (68%), with 24% using the X website, according to Downdetector.

Among the major cities reporting outages and problems were Boston, New York, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Dallas and Miami, according to Downdetector.

By about 11 a.m. ET, service had been restored for many, but several thousand still reported being offline to Downdetector.

The social network had been hit with an outage earlier in the week on Thursday, May 22.

Two months ago, X suffered multiple service outages on March 10 due to what Elon Musk, who purchased Twitter in 2022, called a “massive cyberattack” that he said possibly originated from Ukraine.

Online mavens moved to other networks including Facebook and Bluesky. Encyclopedia Britannica took the opportunity to post an image of its hardback encyclopedias, noting, “Unlike Twitter, these bad boys never go down.”
