What actually is Truth Social? The rogue social media app created by Donald Trump

It’s basically a gossip page on Elon Musk at this point

Donald Trump and Elon Musk are making swipes at each other again and not only is it all painfully juvenile, but the feud is incredibly public too.

They’ve literally gone from enemies to lovers and right back to enemies again, I honestly can’t keep up. With Elon owning X, President Trump must’ve felt left out, because he went on to launch his own social media platform in 2022.

Trump supporters will already know, but the app Truth Social was launched three years ago as a means of the president to communicate freely online. The app climbed to number one on the app store on the day of its release in February 2022, but a lot of people still don’t know what it is.

Truth Social is an alternative ‘free speech’ app

Most of us are unfamiliar with Truth Social, the app favoured by Donald Trump. His dispute with Elon recently brought attention to the app, when the president replied to Elon online, but not in Tweets, in Truths.

Whilst a lot of us have never heard of it before, the app has been around for a few years now.

Donald Trump actually created Truth Social in response to being banned from major social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube following the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot

It’s laid out very similarly to X (formerly Twitter) in terms of both design and user experience. However, the word “truth” has been crammed into as many places as possible in order to reiterate that its an app to exercise free speech.

The feed is called a “Truth Feed” where users can post a “Truth” and attach links, photos or videos. They can also like, Re-Truth, reply, quote Truth and share posts externally.

It’s users are based mainly in the US, with 84 per cent of accounts being located there. Only approximately 1.8 per cent of people in the UK have accounts by comparison.

The popularity of the app is also unclear, with some estimates put active users around two million monthly active users, but other sources suggesting up to six million, depending on the metric.

In all honestly, I’m not sure how well the whole thing is going to catch on in the long run, and I’m not convinced I’ll hear myself gossiping in the pub about Truths I read the night before. But if it fills a gap in the market, who knows. It’s giving Mean Girls vibes, “Trump, stop trying to make Truth Social happen! It’s not going to happen!”
