On the cusp of a possible entry into the world of art and creativity, is young artist, Dayna Munsamy. One look at the 15-year-old’s realistic pieces of art and you would say that they are done by someone far beyond her years.
The Greenwood Park lass says she has been drawing for as long as she can remember.
Her moment of inspiration was sparked when, as a three-year-old child, she saw a ‘brilliant’ charcoal sketch of a woman by her mother.
Dayna said, “As soon as I saw it, with my competitive nature, I realised I didn’t want to be as good as her, I wanted to be better. From then, I began to practise, and the more I drew, the more I grew to love art.”
The Northlands Girls’ High School pupil cannot recall the exact number of works she has produced (although she quipped it could be hundreds) but just from last year, she has done about 50- this a balancing act with her school life.
Her works, she says, are based on internet references that are unique, with vibrant colouring or good contrast, and can take between five to 13 hours to complete, depending on the size and details.
“I then sketch, and paint, shade or colour with pencil depending on my choice of medium for that piece. But sometimes when I’m feeling fancy while painting on canvas, I’ll add a wash of coloured paint that is prominent in the reference’s undertone, over my sketch to help in my process of colour picking for the painting,” she explained further.

In the world of art, she said she draws inspiration from the ‘masters’. “I admire Michelangelo’s ability to convey form, Van Gogh’s brilliant use of colour, Raphael’s ability to capture life, Dali’s unmeasured creativity in his mad surrealism, everything about Gustav Klimt, and Monet’s ability to perfectly convey mood in his art with his piece depicting tranquillity,” Dayna added.

Despite her prolific output, none of her works has been exhibited. She did come close to sending some of her pieces last year to a local gallery.
The talented youngster recalls, “I visited an art gallery with a friend and got their email from a worker after showing them my art for fun. I never actually ended up sending them anything but I might do so this year.”
Why this hesitation?
She said, “A part of me feels like I still need to grow my skill and find a distinct style to my art before I can even show it in galleries. I’m still young and learning and have only really practised realism and never truly been experimental with my art. But exploring that is a goal of mine.”
As beautiful as her pieces are and meant for the walls of renowned galleries, Dayna says she sees art as no more than a hobby which she adores.
“I feel a career as an artist could be unstable. I’m happy with just having it as a relief to my stresses and a form of my expression from time to time,” she said. The dynamic lass said she is currently working towards finding a career in architecture or civil engineering.
