LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The Kentucky Performing Arts Center honored Black women in the arts, both those in the past and the future, on Saturday.
It was their “Ode to Black Women Artists” and featured local artists doing spoken word poetry, dances, live paintings and more to show the impact African American women have had on the Louisville arts scene.
They also paid tribute to legends like Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Toni Morrison to name just a few.
“Black women, sometimes, don’t get the recognition that they need or that they deserve,” Dr. Tamekka Cornelius of the Kentucky Performing Arts said. “So we wanted to be that voice for them to be able to highlight and just really show off their talent and their art.”
The event was free and open to the public.
