Social media trend ‘Kool-Aid Man Challenge’ prompts vandalism in Cranston

A social media trend encouraging vandalism has made its way to Cranston.

Police said at least two fences were damaged this weekend, possibly by kids recreating a classic commercial.

Giant holes were punched into privacy fences on the Cranston-Johnston line.

You could see right through to the pool at the home on Birchwood Drive.

A few streets over, the gaps are smaller but still noticeable.

“It’s a little upsetting,” Wayne Cushman, neighbor said.

One homeowner who declined to speak with us on camera said he was a victim of the Kool-Aid Man challenge.

Videos, often appearing on TikTok, encourage teens to run through a fence, like the soft drink mascot did in advertisements.

Neighbors were not thrilled about kids re-creating the old commercials.

“I think it’s terrible kids are defacing property and stuff like that. Hopefully, they get caught, somebody catches them on a ring doorbell and reports it,” Cushman said.

Residents told us a similar situation happened in the area near Plainfield Pike months ago.

NBC 10 also spoke with a Raynham woman who became a victim of the challenge, last fall.

“I think we were pretty shocked at how easily the fence exploded, ” Jodee Viola said at the time.

Back in Cranston there’s still repair work to be done.

“It could be frustrating for a homeowner and expensive,” Cushman said.

Police said so far there are no suspects in the two recent cases of vandalism.
