With the recent proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) and its numerous possibilities for reshaping global business, the Networked Artistic Learning Algorithm (NALA) spearheads the charge for revolutionizing the art industry. Founded in 2020 by Benjamin Gulak while still at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), NALA is taking a novel approach to applying recommender engine technology to redefine how connections are made between artists and art lovers.

Similar to how streaming platforms make highly personalized content recommendations for users, NALA, built on the world’s largest fine art database, can create customized suggestions for art lovers, ensuring they see the art they most likely want to buy.
NALA’s mission mirrors the vision of its founder. Ben had always had a love for art, immersing himself in art camps growing up and even going to Italy under a study abroad program to hone his painting skills. Although he initially pursued a path in Mechanical Engineering at MIT and later delved into entrepreneurship with a manufacturing business, art remained a constant presence in his life.

A trip to Miami led to his work being displayed in galleries alongside renowned artists. This experience opened Ben’s eyes to the untapped potential within the industry. He observed, “The art industry, by its very nature, is archaic. Galleries tend to gatekeep and exclude the majority of artists. The problem is that buyers usually rely on galleries to discover curated selections. They see only a tiny sliver of the marketplace when countless talented individuals are yet to be seen outside of local markets or communities.” Ben envisioned a platform that could democratize art access and connect artists directly with buyers worldwide.
NALA was then designed to operate on a powerful recommender engine. This cutting-edge technology analyzes user data to deliver personalized recommendations based on past behavior, demographic information, and contextual cues. By continuously learning from user interactions, the algorithms refine their suggestions, making them increasingly accurate over time.
Art lovers benefit from NALA because it removes all the middlemen from the transaction process, putting control directly in the hands of the art lover—no more marketing gimmicks, pushy sales tactics, or artificial bubbles. At the same time, artists benefit by gaining access to the global marketplace and buyers they would never have come into contact with before.

Ben shared, “Art lovers on a specific budget might find themselves going through hundreds of pages of images. A fantastic piece of art might be buried within the search results, unseen by the buyer. NALA changes the game by opening the market to all artists, allowing them to participate while ensuring the art most suited for individual buyers is shown first.” This approach helps art lovers discover the perfect art piece that fits their unique preferences.
Ultimately, NALA reshapes art acquisition through its pioneering platform that leverages new technologies and data science. As the art market continues to undergo significant transformations, the company dedicates itself to refining how art is discovered, valued, and enjoyed, opening doors of opportunities for creators and collectors around the globe.
