In honor of Women’s History Month, I would like to share my favorite female music artists who never fail to lift my spirits and put me in a dancing mood. Each of them serves a different purpose in my life, as neither one of them fits into the same genre. Not to mention, I like having diversity when it comes to my music, as I enjoy having different artists to fit my every mood. So, here are my favorite female artists and my favorite songs by them!
Kali Uchis
I have always been such a big fan of Kali ever since 2018, back when I was a freshman in high school. Back then, she was more of an indie artist, collaborating with all of my favorite artists from that era. My love for her has only grown stronger, especially after her latest Latina Urbana album released this January, “Orquídeas.” It’s a Spanish album that holds so much passion and love that we can hear effectively in her voice. The entire album is catchy and is the perfect thing to listen to while working or walking around with headphones in. My favorite song by her is “Me Pongo Loca.” I highly recommend this album to anyone who is looking to get into Latin music and is looking to support a female artist.
Peggy Gou
I became a fan of Peggy a few years ago after my friend invited me to see her in concert at The Shrine in Los Angeles. She’s a female DJ who performs worldwide at practically every house music festival. Seeing her live that first time made me fall in love, from the way she had the perfect beat transitions to the way her energetic sets made the audience come alive. She has such great taste in music that after the concert, I looked up a lot of the songs on her set list and added them to my playlist. I love her songs that are purely just beats, specifically “Gou Talk.” They make me feel electrified and are the perfect remedy for when it’s late at night and I’m trying to find the energy to finish writing my essays or when I’m getting ready for a night out with my friends.
Stevie Nicks
I love listening to ’70s music, especially when it’s the summertime and I’m driving down Pacific Coast Highway or lying out on the beach. My parents introduced me to her and Fleetwood Mac at an early age, and I have been obsessed with her since. Her voice is so majestic and vivid that it never fails to put me in a joyful mood. I listen to her the most when I drive around with my windows down and the sun shining — because to me, that’s what the embodiment of Stevie is. I can’t help but dance and grab a random item near me to act as a microphone when I’m cleaning and blasting her music in my room. The song that makes me do that the most is her famous song, “Stand Back.” She easily brings out the best version of me.
Beyoncé
I honestly did not listen to her that much until her newest album, “Renaissance,” was released two years ago. It’s one of my favorite albums to this day and was my most streamed album last year. Her voice is compelling throughout all her songs and “Renaissance” is genuinely a “no-skip” album. It’s something that I can listen to while walking around a city or driving to complete errands. No matter what mood I’m in, it will always get me pumped. It’s also so captivating, never failing to make me sing my heart out and dance until I’m out of breath. I love her confidence, and I think from listening to her music, she has made me grow my own self-confidence. A song by her that I will never skip is “Virgo’s Groove,” which was my most streamed song on Spotify Wrapped in 2023.
Since March is Women’s History Month, I encourage everyone to spread their wings and listen to female music artists they haven’t before. These female artists are just a few of my favorites, but there are so many more who deserve more recognition in the music industry, as they always bring a new, unique sound to the table.
