(WJET/WFXP) — Two members of a local radio station operated by college students received two awards at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s annual media conference in The Big Apple.
Two members of Gannon University’s 90.5 WERG received an award for content creation and leadership at the 85th annual conference taking home awards for their work on social media and sportscasting in competition with over 100 other schools across the country.
Social media manager Madeline Emerson was named the Best Social Media Manager in the U.S. and sports director Trevor Kubeja won Best Sports Play-By-Play for his work calling an Erie Otters game.
“It’s so hard to put into words the feeling I had when I heard my name announced as the winner. Never in a million years did I think that I would be where I am: a national award winner for Gannon’s radio station. The radio has felt like home to me ever since I first began, so to be able to represent and acknowledge all the hard work that has been put into WERG is so special,” Emerson said about her win.
This isn’t the first time 90.5 has received recognition from the conference with the station taking home Best College Radio Station (under 10,000 students) in 2014 and again in 2021.
During the conference, students also got to visit panels hosted by industry and academic professionals about pop-culture trends, crafting an on-air personality and style, career development, news writing and sports play-by-play while also getting to see New York City.
With next year’s conference set for March 2025, a release from Gannon said students have already begun getting ready for the big event.
