For the past 15 years, the group Gay Women of Rehoboth has served as a community organizer for gay women looking for a fun, safe and supportive environment. Building on that foundation, the group is organizing its first weekend-long event called Women’s Art Project.
Taking place at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center in January over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Women’s Art Project is the brainchild of Lisa Soens, GWOR director, and Viki Dee of Dolce Vita Productions.
“We shared the same vision,” said Dee, a well-known entertainer in the local music scene. “The goal was to give people something to do in the middle of the winter.”
Soens said that weekend worked well because there isn’t anything planned at the convention center and it allows people from surrounding metropolitan areas to come to Rehoboth for a long weekend.
“It’s the perfect weekend,” said Soens.
The event fits well with the organization’s mission statement, which is to create a community for the gay women of Rehoboth that embraces unity through education, the arts, social and entertainment events.
Women’s Art Project includes live musical performances Friday and Saturday nights. Artists include Be Steadwell, Yasmin Williams, Vicci Martinez, The Gem Fatales, Sarah Peacock, E’lissa Peacock, Dina Hall Band, Pamela Williams and Jessica Kirson.
It’s a diverse group of gay women performers from the East Coast, said Soens.
During the day, the event will feature a poker tournament, bingo and a cornhole competition. It ends with a tea dance Sunday afternoon.
“It’s going to be a fun weekend,” said Soens. “Everyone is invited.”
In addition to hosting its first large-scale event, GWOR also recently became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. People wanted to take a more active role in the community, said Soens.
