A Global Village

What is Social Media?

Social Media are websites and applications that allow everyone to create, publish, or share content and can even participate in social networking. Instagram, TikTok, X etc. are some examples of social media websites.

What is a Global Village?

‘Global village’ refers to the idea that the world is interconnected in the context of communication and interconnectedness.

“We have become Global citizens in the Global Village” — Peter F. Drucker

The invention of social media has transformed us into a global village. We are connected through the internet and social media, getting the latest information within seconds, no matter where we are!

It has revolutionized our lives, making us completely dependent on them. For every little task, we rely on social media. If we need a recipe for baking cookies, we will not look for it in an old recipe book, rather we will look for a short video of it on social media. Similarly, to see if the new product is worth our time, we will rely on an influencer review instead of its reviews.

“The internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow” — Bill Gates

Weighing Pros and Cons of Social Media

Social Balance

Everything has its benefits and drawbacks, this is the principle of the universe to create balance and harmony. By weighing the Pros and Cons of social media we gain a deeper understanding of its impacts.

Pros of Social Media

Social media has changed our lives, having numerous positive effects on our lives. Let’s look at them:

Firstly, we can contact anyone from around the world in seconds. Say goodbye to waiting weeks for letters, texting is an efficient alternative allowing us to chat with our family, send documents to our boos at work, and send thousands of reels to our friends.

Secondly, we can watch any type of show from our home. There is no need to go to the theatre to watch it, just sit back on your comfy couch and watch the latest shows with ease.

Thirdly, online shopping and online business have facilitated us. One can order his new suit online and keep working from his home. To promote their products many platforms like Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), YouTube etc. are used.

Getting notified of recent threats and breakouts allows us to be prepared beforehand.

Finally, one of the greatest benefits of social media is that it has the power to reveal the truth. It is widely approved that social media is a worldwide platform and any type of information can go viral within seconds. Whether it is a fraud secret of a well-known organization that they do not intend to share OR a politician’s black-mail to their rival.

“Social media is the ultimate equalizer, it gives a voice and a platform to anyone willing to engage” — Amy Jo Martin

Cons of Social Media

Just like mentioned before, everything has its disadvantages to maintain balance in the universe. Where social media has undoubtedly facilitated us in many ways, its misuse can also destroy our lives.

Firstly, the world of social media is a great source of cybercrimes; online bullying, scamming, emotional blackmailing, sending pornography, and stealing personal data are just some of the dangers of social media.

Secondly, people who are under the influence of the world of social media seem to cut themselves from the real world. they believe in everything they see online and are even willing to go to any extreme to achieve that life.

Moreover, social media has made us two-faced. We are a different person online and have a completely different personality when we meet face to face. In the media world, we are fearless, rich, happy, and careless but in reality, we are scared, barely living, depressed, sad and constantly worrying about what other people will think.

Lastly, where the social media world has the power to speak the truth, it also has the power to alter the truth, bend the viewer’s mind to their liking and make them against the hard truth. With just one click or swipe, we can spread envy, jealousy, hatred, and anger while making our lives better.

An anonymous fellow said that social media has given voice to too many people who should just shut up.

“Social media has made us so eager to show and tell, but there is nothing quite like savoring the moment and keeping it for yourself” — Emily Giffin

A brief summary of comparison

Conclusion

Although the disadvantages are more harmful, but output of social media world depends on how we use it. If we keep focusing on the cons then the eighteenth century was far more safer than today.

The key is to maintain balance in both, the social media world and the physical world.

“In all aspects of our lives, balance is the key. Doing one thing too much can cause upset, as the old saying goes, everything in moderation is the secret!” — Catherine Pulsifer
