Hacking for social media clout? IT expert Art Samaniego hits back at accuser

Manila Bulletin technology editor and information technology (IT) expert Art Samaniego Jr. denied an employee’s allegation that he ordered the hacking of some government and bank websites to boost his social media reach.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested on Friday (June 21) an employee of Manila Bulletin for allegedly breaking into the websites of the National Security Council, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), as well as some banks.

The suspect claimed that Samaniego ordered the hacking of the websites so he could have fresh content for his column and social media platforms.

In a statement sent to Bilyonaryo, Samaniego claimed he did not stand to gain anything from compromising AFP’s website.

“He (the suspect) claimed I asked him to hack AFP para meron daw ako content kaya lang I cant write about it, kasi meron kami AFP beat reporter. May butas na agad allegation niya,” the editor said.

The suspect, he added, works at the administrative department of the Manila Bulletin and not in IT, as earlier reported.
