The City of Porterville has recognized Imagine Art Center as a 2024 Outstanding Business Honoree, celebrating its significant contributions to the community’s quality of life and economic growth. Imagine Art Center was honored at Tuesday’s Porterville City Council meeting.
Since its inception in 2010, Imagine Art Center has become a cornerstone of Porterville’s cultural and economic development. Founded by Rebecca Ybarra, the center was established with a vision of inclusivity, fostering a space where people from all walks of life can come together to share ideas, nurture creativity, and be inspired. Over the years, the center’s growth has paralleled the revitalization of downtown Porterville, particularly with its recent expansion into a 6,000-square-foot studio space on South Main Street. The expansion has rejuvenated the southern downtown district, increasing foot traffic while the center offers a diverse range of creative programs.
Imagine Art Center exemplifies how cultural initiatives can drive local prosperity. It creates employment opportunities, with 12 full-time staff and up to 35 part-time employees working in its Arts Enrichment Program. These jobs not only contribute to the local economy but also provide meaningful employment in the arts sector. Additionally, the center’s collaborations with local businesses, such as Stafford’s Chocolates and the American Legion Auxiliary, have further strengthened the community’s economic and social bonds.
The impact of Imagine Art Center extends well beyond its physical location. Its Arts Enrichment Program reached more than 100,000 students during the 2023-2024 school year, bringing art education to classrooms throughout the Central Valley and supporting homeschool groups. This outreach plays a critical role in fostering creativity among young people, nurturing future generations of artists, and enriching the broader cultural landscape.
Imagine Art Center attracts both local and visiting artists through unique offerings like its Pottery program which is rare in the Central Valley. These programs not only boost tourism but also contribute to the city’s economic vitality. The center’s gift shop supports the local creative economy by providing a platform for artists to showcase and sell their work. Visitors can purchase a variety of locally crafted items, from jewelry and clothing to candles and pottery, and even participate in a plant-cutting exchange, adding another layer of community engagement.
Community involvement is central to Imagine Art Center’s mission. Through events such as paint nights, family art game nights, and piano lessons, the center offers numerous opportunities for residents to connect with each other and engage with the arts. These activities not only enhance the social fabric of Porterville but also create a welcoming environment where everyone can feel a sense of belonging.
Imagine Art Center continues to expand its offerings and deepen its ties with the community as a vital part of Porterville’s cultural and economic landscape. The center’s ongoing commitment to providing accessible art education and fostering collaborations with local businesses makes it a vibrant and inspiring hub for creativity and community engagement.
