Taylor Swift’s Latest No. 1 Sees Its Sales Surge By Several Hundred Percent

Taylor Swift stopped promoting her single “Fortnight” weeks ago. The singer moved on from that smash to the second official single from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, and now “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” is enjoying its moment. While she might not be pushing the first track from her recently-released full-length any longer, fans are still consuming the tune, and it recently experienced a huge jump in purchases.

“Fortnight” was named Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month. The superstar and her collaborator Post Malone took home the most coveted prize of the evening, and all the attention that the cut received helped it become a sales win all over again.

Billboard reports that in the three days that followed the latest VMAs—September 12 through 14—Swift and Malone’s single sold 700 copies. That’s not a huge sum, especially when considering the fact that two of the biggest names in the music industry produced it, but it is up significantly from before the visual that accompanies the tune won its awards.

Sales of “Fortnight” skyrocketed 235% following the VMAs, when compared to the three days that preceded the televised event. Of course, the duet has already sold many thousands of copies in the months it’s been available, so the cut shouldn’t be expected to become a massive seller at this point in its life.

“Fortnight” also gained on streaming platforms, though not nearly as dramatically. The single was up 26% in plays on sites like Spotify and Apple Music following MTV’s show.

Swift and Malone took home not just Video of the Year, but also Best Collaboration and Song of the Summer. The lead star also collected Artist of the Year, Best Pop, and Best Direction, as she directed her own clip.

“Fortnight” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 this spring, and it held on for two frames. The track arrived at the same time that The Tortured Poets Department opened atop the Billboard 200 with one of the largest starting sums of all time. The track recently fell off the competitive chart, and her current focus, “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” is on its way down as well.
