Mill Valley Film Festival doc shines light on pioneering artist

Tamara de Lempicka, the iconic Art Deco painter who fled fascism in Europe in 1939 to come to the U.S., is the subject of a forthcoming exhibit at San Francisco’s de Young Museum and of a Bay Area filmmaker’s entry into this month’s Mill Valley Film Festival.

The de Young will host the first U.S. retrospective of Lempicka’s artwork beginning Oct. 12. A day earlier, Orinda filmmaker Julie Rubio’s fascinating documentary, “The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival,” will premiere at 7 p.m. at Mill Valley’s Sequoia Cinema as part of the 47th iteration of the festival. One of 129 movies from 40 countries set to screen during the festival, Larkspur’s Lark Theater will also show the film Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.
