The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and ArtFarm Studios have launched a creative collaboration that combines the worlds of music and visual art. Inspired by the concept of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, this project encourages young artists to create works based on the music, which will be featured during a live performance by the ASO in January 2025.
Music Inspiring Art
In 1874, Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky composed Pictures at an Exhibition, a piano suite in 10 movements inspired by the paintings of artist Viktor Hartmann. The ASO and ArtFarm Studios are reversing this process by asking students to listen to Mussorgsky’s music and create visual art based on the emotions and images the music evokes.
These student-created artworks will be projected behind the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra during their live performance of Pictures at an Exhibition at Maryland Hall. Additionally, the artworks will be displayed throughout Anne Arundel County in the months leading up to the concert, giving the public an opportunity to engage with the project.

ArtFarm Studios is offering workshops for young artists to participate in this unique collaboration:
Participants will create artworks inspired by Mussorgsky’s composition, and these pieces will become part of the multi-sensory experience during the live symphony performance.
Public Exhibition and Performance
The collaboration culminates in January 2025 with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra’s live performance of Pictures at an Exhibition at Maryland Hall. During the concert, the students’ art will be projected behind the orchestra, blending music and visual art into a single experience. Before the concert, the artworks will also be displayed at various locations throughout Anne Arundel County.
