North Country Inspiration: Tattoos for women’ health

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Bare Knuckle Tattoo is a women-led business in Watertown.

The artists place high value on creative expression and each person’s right to do what they want with their body.

For that reason, the shop is partnering with Planned Parenthood on Monday for flash tattoos representing feminine power.

“Today we are raising money for our local Planned Parenthood and we’re going to have snacks and tattoos and music and it’s going on from 11 to 6 and we hope lots of women come out and join us,” tattoo artist Kristina Miller said.

Some of the flash tattoos are more subtle like hearts and sparkles. Others are more focused on female empowerment and reproductive health.

“Tattooing really closely relates to body autonomy because in tattooing, there’s a very personal choice made of what you’re getting on yourself, and that decision is yours and yours only,” Miller said, “so we have firm beliefs in body autonomy.”

In addition to supporting Planned Parenthood, Monday’s event aims to bring women together.

“It’s important that women support women because we have each other and we understand each other,” Miller said, “and when we’re together, we create safe spaces for each other.”

All proceeds from Monday’s tattoos will benefit local women seeking healthcare.

“We’re fully supportive of anybody that wants help in that area,” Miller said, “and we’re fully supportive of anybody that doesn’t want to do that, and being part of this event is really heartwarming and in a time where it feels like women are under fire, we’ve kind of turned it around and are really surprised at how much the community has been supportive of this and we’re really thankful of that.”
