The senior prosecutor of the Balearic Islands, Julio Cano, has warned on Wednesday of the direct influence that social networks exert on pre and adolescents in relation to eating disorders and self-injurious behavior. This is what he has detailed in his appearance in the Commission of Institutional and General Affairs of the Parliament to present the reports of the Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning the years 2022 and 2023. In relation to the most recent one, which presents as a subject of in-depth analysis the relationship of minors with the Internet and social networks, Cano explained that especially since the coronavirus pandemic,“clear signs of alarm” are being observed on the mental health of minors derived, among other issues, by the use and abuse of social networks. Thus, the report of the Public Prosecutor’s Office shows, due to the direct influence of social networks, an increase in involuntary hospitalizations for eating disorders. “It is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said, urging to address the problem so that it does not become chronic. Cano has referred to the existence of profiles that he has called pro-disorders and that encourage challenges of bad habits and that generate a “very strong” addictive behavior. “The rewards and likes generate dopamine discharges similar to those that a smoker receives when he lights up a cigarette after a long time without smoking,” he argued. Social networks, he warned, are also behind the increase in the number of visits to the emergency room by children with self-injurious behavior.
“Keep your hate.”
During the interventions of the parliamentary groups, the deputy of Unidas Podemos, Cristina Gómez, left the commission after the Vox deputy Sergio Rodríguez referred in his intervention to the higher rates of crimes committed by foreigners and irregular immigrants. “The solution is expulsion,” Rodriguez has stated. ”
I can’t stand it. Keep your hatred where it fits. “Gomez has spat Gomez has Rodriguez at the exit of the session, although he has returned later. “It is a shame everything that has been said,” said for his part the deputy of MÉS per Mallorca, Maria Ramon. In his reply to the deputy of Vox, the senior prosecutor has pointed out that he does not have the data he has presented–sourced from the National Institute of Statistics, the Ministry of the Interior or the General Council of the Judiciary–because the Prosecutor’s Office does not make these distinctions, which he has described as contrary to constitutional values. “We could also distinguish between those over and under 65 years of age, or between Andalusians, Asturians or people from the Balearic Islands,” he argued. Regarding the relations made by the deputy of Vox on the authorship of sexual crimes or certain types of crimes, Julio Cano has pointed out that, in his experience, they have more to do with marginality and social exclusion than with origin. In relation to male violence, Cano has drawn attention, to questions from the PP deputy Cristina Gil an increase in complaints after short periods of time. “Phenomena that seemed overcome are being reproduced,” he said. He has also warned of the number of girls who do not recognize attitudes that should not be tolerated.
