Capt. Zachery Theile of the Tri-Township Fire District in Saginaw County fell when a catwalk gave way beneath him during a storage barn fire in Chesaning.
CHESANING, Mich. (WJRT) – A firefighter from the Tri-Township Fire District in Saginaw County is recovering at home after suffering a fall while battling a barn fire on Monday.
The fire department said on Facebook that Capt. Zachery Theile was released from an area hospital on Tuesday and sent home to continue recovering from serious injuries.
“He has a long road to recovery, but he is in great spirits,” the Tri-Township Fire District wrote.
A GoFundMe page set up to benefit Theile’s family says he was standing on an elevated catwalk while battling a storage barn fire at Dad’s Country Corner Inc. near the intersection of Broad and Wood streets in Chesaning on Monday afternoon.
The catwalk gave way beneath Theile and he fell about 20 feet. He landed on his back, which caused three spinal fractures and four bulging discs, according to the GoFundMe page set up by a relative.
Theile’s spinal cord was not damaged and he has a full range of motion in all of his extremities. But he faces a number of activity restrictions during his recovery, which will limit how much he can work over the holiday season.
