The American rapper Kendrick Lamar has surprised all his fans with the unexpected release of his album ‘GNX,’ which not only left them astonished for its lack of prior promotion but also featured a collaboration with Mexican artist Deyra Barrera on three of the tracks.
The songs, titled ‘Wacced out murals,’ Reincarnated’ and ‘Gloria’ combine rhythms and styles in a way that is simply incredible.
She isn’t the only Latin artist in the production. Lamar also included two male rappers. Mexican Peysoh and Mexican-Guatemalan-American Lefty Gunplay. However, she is the only one that sings in Spanish, and it’s beautiful.
Who Is Deyra Barrera?
This regional Mexican music artist has singing in her blood, as she has mentioned in multiple interviews about growing up listening to her mother sing. In 2021, she participated in the third season of *La Voz* on TV Azteca, where she performed the song ‘Haz lo que quieras’ during a blind audition that captivated the show’s coaches.
Barrera reached the early stages of the competition under Edith Barrera’s mentorship. Although she didn’t advance far, she stood out as one of the most remarkable contestants of her season.
Passionate About Regional Mexican Music
Currently, this Latin artist has released two albums showcasing her musical evolution. The first, titled *Sufriendo a solas* (2008), features over 11 songs, including the standout track ‘La Farsante.’ Her second album, *Mi juventud a los 40,* contains 12 tracks, with highlights like ‘Te hubieras ido antes’ and the promotional single ‘Sufriendo a solas.’
Barrera is now recognized for her dedication to regional Mexican music, which includes styles like mariachi, banda, and corridos, allowing her to demonstrate her vocal power and versatility.
Before achieving her dream of becoming a recognized star, Deyra spent time covering songs by iconic artists like Marco Antonio Solís, José Alfredo Jiménez, and Frank Sinatra on her YouTube channel. On her Instagram account, you can also find some of her renditions of classic songs.
The Collaboration with Kendrick Lamar
Lamar’s album *GNX* features Barrera alongside other prominent artists such as AzChike, Dody 6, Hitta J3, Peysoh, Siete, Wallie The Sensei, and Young Threat, all hailing from neighborhoods on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
However, the collaboration on ‘Wacced out murals’ stands out as Barrera is the only Latin artist on the album. The song uniquely blends genres and cultures, promising to become a major hit.
Without a doubt, this collaboration marks another milestone in Barrera’s career, showcasing her vocal talent and earning recognition not only in Mexico but also in countries around the world where Lamar’s music reaches.
The big question now is whether she and the rest of Latino artists in the album will be invited to perform at his Super Bowl Halftime Show. It would be amazing!
