Rockhampton art lovers can experience significant works created by female artists drawn from the National Gallery’s collection, in an exhibition on display at Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) from late November.

Know My Name: Australian Women Artists is a National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition celebrating the work of women artists and their contribution to Australia’s cultural life throughout history to the present day.

The exhibition aims to provide a platform for the considerable contributions that female artists have made throughout the history of Australian art, and reintroduce artists who were overlooked for their gender to contemporary audiences.

In conjunction with the exhibition, RMOA will conduct Know My Name: Making Space.

Making Space is an ongoing program of hands-on activities designed to accompany selected major exhibitions at RMOA as a free creative learning experience for participants of all ages and abilities.

Know My Name: Making Space will be conducted by three local artists, Niloufar Lovegrove, Obscura and Emma Ward. Each of the artists has devised engaging physical activities, workshops, and artist talks related to their own arts practice.

The artists were selected after an expression of interest callout open to women, non-binary and / or gender diverse artists in the wider Central and Western Queensland areas.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities, Culture and Heritage spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson, said Know My Name: Making Space is a great initiative by RMOA.

“This is the third Making Space that RMOA has conducted. Feedback from those held alongside  Piinpi:Contemporary Indigenous Fashion  and Maximum Madness was very positive,” he said

“Not only does Making Space enhance visitor experience but it is supports local artists and significantly increases the audience for their arts practice.

Making Space will be open alongside the exhibition including the Christmas school holiday period, so I would like to encourage families to come and visit during the school holidays,” he said.

Know My Name: Australian Women Artists will run from 30 November 2024 to 23 February 2025. Admission is free.

Making Space will be open to the public throughout the exhibition period. It will also be the location for school holiday activities from Saturday 7 December to Sunday 26 January 2025. Also available for schools and groups during term time.

Know My Name: Australian Women Artists is a National Gallery of Australia Touring Exhibition supported by the Australian Government through Visions of Australia and the National Collecting Institutions Touring Outreach Program.
