Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun made headlines on Friday by fulfilling his promise to eat a banana from the $6.2 million artwork titled Comedian, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.
The artwork features a banana duct-taped to a wall and was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, where Sun was one of seven bidders.
At a press conference in Hong Kong, Sun took a bite of the banana in front of journalists and influencers, declaring, “It’s much better than other bananas. It’s really quite good.”
He described the piece as “iconic” and drew parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency, stating, “Eating it at a press event can also become a part of the artwork’s narrative.”Sun expressed initial disbelief upon winning the bid, saying he felt “this could become something big.”
He also announced plans to buy 100,000 bananas from the vendor who sold him the original fruit, aiming to distribute them for free. However, vendor Shah Alam raised concerns about the practicality of such an order, noting the slim profit margins in banana sales.
Sun’s investment in the artwork and his recent $30 million stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto initiative linked to Donald Trump, have further solidified his presence in both the art and cryptocurrency worlds.
