WVU expert discusses potential social media legislation regarding online minor safety

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — Australia passed a sweeping social media ban for children under the age of 16 in November, and while no such laws have been enacted in the United States or West Virginia, the conversation regarding minors’ online safety is progressing, according to a West Virginia University expert.

According to the BBC, the Australian government said the ban — which will likely cover sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X but not messaging apps or gaming services — will be reinforced by an age-verification process that will be ironed out before the law takes effect.
