The author of ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ will perform a selection of his works at the Hatter Street venue on February 7.
The cinema has a history with Mr de Bernières, having screened the premiere of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin in 2001.
In 2024, it welcomed the author for an exclusive introduction to the film as part of the Lavenham Literary Festival.
Mr de Bernières, who has been writing poetry since the age of 12 and composing songs since he was 17, will read his poetry, sing his songs, tell jokes, and recount anecdotes at the event.
Waterstones booksellers will also be present with a selection of Mr de Bernières’ books, including his three poetry collections and his latest novel ‘Light Over Liskeard.’
The author will be signing books during the evening.
Gareth Boggis, general manager of Abbeygate Cinema, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Louis de Bernières back to Abbeygate.
“Abbeygate has a rich history of arts and culture, and with origins as a music hall, an evening of songs and poetry with a world-famous novelist is very welcome.”
Tickets for the event are now on sale from the Abbeygate Cinema website or the cinema box office.
Mr de Bernières said: “I am excited to return to my favourite cinema in Bury St Edmunds. Obviously!”
