Androniqi Zengo Antoniu: Albania’s First Female Visual Artist

On May 26, 1913, Androniqi Zengo Antoniu was born in the village of Dardhë. She became an iconographer, painter, and teacher.

She completed her higher studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts. There, she stood out for her excellent results. Alongside her sister, she became one of the first professional female visual artists in Albania.

Androniqi restored murals at the Church of St. Mary and St. Athanasius in Korça, and at the Church of St. Nicholas in Hoçisht.

She returned to Albania and began teaching at the girls’ school in Korça.

In 1937, for the 25th anniversary of Albania’s Independence, she opened her first exhibition. A year later, she held her second show. It reached beyond the local scene and made her an inspiration for Albanian women.

Her name appeared in major galleries and art fairs of the time. In 1940, the city of Bari in Italy honored her painting The Castle of Petrela. The exhibition also featured major Albanian artists like Vangjush Mio and Zef Kolombi.

During the communist period, she received recognition both in Albania and abroad for her work. Her paintings often feature portraits, landscapes, traditional costumes, and her hometown, Dardhë.
