BHS student taken into custody following social media threat

BRAINERD — A student at Brainerd High School was taken into custody early Thursday, Jan. 23, after school officials became aware of a threatening social media post from the student.

In an email to Brainerd High School parents and guardians, Brainerd Public Schools Superintendent Peter Grant said when school officials became aware of the social media post, the Brainerd Police Department was called and the student was taken into custody.

In a news release, Brainerd Police Chief John Davis said his department was notified of the threat about 7:16 a.m. and the student, a 14-year-old male from Baxter, was located at 7:49 a.m., taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention facility.

Davis said the student posted a threatening video message on social media, which was sent to a large group of students who attend Brainerd High School.

The threat was not directed toward a specific individual, Davis said. Neither Grant nor Davis disclosed the specific nature of the threat, but Davis noted the incident is still an active investigation and will be referred to the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Davis declined to comment further on the incident when reached by phone later Thursday morning.

Grant said the Brainerd Police Department hasn’t identified any continued threats to Brainerd High School. He added high school administration and police officers will continue to investigate the situation to ensure there are no other threats connected to this incident.

“Safety must be our number one priority for our students and staff. If you have any information regarding this incident or any other behavior concerning the safety of our schools, please contact the Brainerd Police Department immediately,” Grant said in his email. “We are grateful for law enforcement’s immediate response and partnership with our community to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff.”

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
