Bloomberg: France, Spain, Greece Pressing for Social Network Age Restrictions

Bloomberg on Thursday reported that the governments of France, Spain and Greece are pressing for mandatory age restrictions for social networks users on platforms such as Facebook and Elon Musk’s X.

The news agency said digital governance ministers from the trio of EU countries “are coordinating on the proposal ahead of a meeting with their European Union counterparts on June 6,” while pointing to a document it cites.

The new rules would make it mandatory for any device that can access the internet to include age verification technology, Bloomberg reported.

“We need to protect our children,” French President Emmanuel Macron stated this week during an interview on French television.

Earlier this year, the Greek government introduced an initiative restricting social media access for minors under the age of 15. The initiative was billed as part of a national strategy to protect young people from the harmful impact of platforms which have been linked to a rise in addictive habits and can, according to some experts, hinder social maturation and harm their mental health.
