As of midnight on Sunday (6am in Italy), the social network X, formerly Twitter, has begun to be suspended in Brazil, following the failure to comply with the order to appoint a legal representative in the country. An order that the Supreme Court judge (Tribunal supremo federal, Stf), Alexandre de Moraes, had given to the managers of the magnate’s company Elon Musk, Thursday, August 30, with a 24-hour ultimatum.

On Friday afternoon, the magistrate instructed the national telecommunications agency (Anatel) to transmit the provision to operators registered in the country, including Starlink, a company in which Musk has a majority stake, which provides satellite internet service. Because the platform, which according to various estimates has about twenty million users in Brazil, will take time: the operators, each with different procedures, will have to prevent access X to their customers, with protocols valid for both browsers and mobile phones.

At the moment, local media report, only a few large operating companies, out of approximately 20 in the area, have completed the procedure. The suspension, the result of a complex and controversial legal case, will be revoked once the company has appointed a legal representative, the fines have been paid and the other orders of the Court have been carried out.
