Brooklyn artist identified as woman murdered at celeb-studded wellness retreat

A New York City murder incident saw major developments as the victim was identified as a Brooklyn-based artist.

Sabina Rosas was found dead at Shou Sugi Ban House. A spa employee found Rosas’ body in one of the 13 private guest studios. Suffolk County police were unable to give updates about the mode of the murder, but were able to identify the 33-year-old artist who was spending time at the retreat for unspecified reasons.

A Suffolk County Police Department crime scene van and a Southampton town police car arrived on the scene at about 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, before leaving a half-hour later. The scene of the crime was sectioned off from the otherwise peaceful resort by tape.

Shou Sugi Ban House is known for a total luxurious experience, costing $1,000-a-night. After all, it’s known as beloved by stars like Kate Hudson, who even hosted a 2022 party at the location. The event brought celebrities like Stella McCartney and Katie Couric to the fabulous retreat.

The spa’s Hamptons location off of Montauk Highway typically offers serenity and calmness, leaving locals floored by the gruesome act. Jean Wong told the New York Post: “It’s just so uncharacteristic of this area, and that area in particular. It’s very ironic, because you go to a place like that for relaxation and comfort. What could have brought on a murder?”

Murder victim Rosas was originally from Tajikistan before fleeing to Turkmenistan in 1993 amid political turmoil. She returned to her home country in 2003 as she studied painting. She furthered her studies in New York when she moved to the United States in 2009.

Rosas graduated with a bachelor’s degree in new media from Purchase College. However, she was recently living in Tajikistan, according to the New York Daily News.

Her husband flew to New York from Florida, where he splits his time, to discuss the matter with police on Tuesday, according to his roommate. “I think everyone is in shock,” they told the publication.

“I drove by earlier and saw these news trucks and thought, ‘Uh oh, what did Justin Timberlake do this time?’ because the only thing newsworthy that happens here has to do with celebrities,” said resident Lisa Stach. After all, Timberlake brought some other high-level celebrity attention to the otherwise quiet area in recent months after he was hit with a DWI charge.
