Coast Guard closes parts of Mississippi River to recreational traffic

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The U.S. Coast Guard has closed several pools on the Mississippi River to the north and south of La Crosse to recreational traffic.

In a post on the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River Facebook page, it said that a High Water Action Phase is in effect for several pools.

In our area, the ones affected are Pools 5A, 6, and 10.

Pools 5A and 6 run from Whitman, Minnesota down to Trempealeau, Wisconsin.

Pool 10 extends from Harpers Ferry, Iowa to Lock & Dam 9 near Guttenburg, Iowa.

The Facebook post said that “Recreational vessels are prohibited from entering these areas until further notice.”

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard tells WXOW that “This restriction is necessary due to high water levels causing buoys to be off station and excess debris in the river.”

He also said that other areas are in the High Water Watch Phase and aren’t restricted at this time.

They are closely monitoring river levels and would send out updates if any changes took place.
