Crypto mogul Justin Sun, who brought banana duct-taped to wall for $6.2 million, plans to eat it

A banana duct-taped to a wall has redefined the boundaries of art and value, selling for an astonishing $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The piece, Comedian, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was purchased by cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, who sees it as more than just fruit—it’s a symbol of cultural dialogue bridging art, memes, and digital innovation.
While the banana itself will inevitably rot, its true worth lies in the certificate of authenticity that allows its recreation as an original artwork. In a twist, Sun plans to eat the banana as part of an artistic experience, ensuring this multimillion-dollar purchase remains a unique moment in art history.

Justin Sun’s bold plan: Eating ‘Comedian’ as part of the experience

The yellow banana duct-taped to a wall has sparked debates about art, value, and perception after selling for a jaw-dropping $6.2 million (Rs 52.35 crore) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. Created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, Comedian garnered intense bidding before cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, founder of TRON, made the final purchase.
The bidding started at $800,000, with the final price reaching $5.2 million, plus $1 million in auction fees. Sun chose to pay using cryptocurrency, adding a modern twist to the event. Not only that, but Sun plans to eat the banana as part of what he describes as “a unique artistic experience.” However, since bananas decay, his multimillion-dollar purchase doesn’t include the actual fruit but relies on the accompanying certificate, which is the true source of the artwork’s value.
David Galperin, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art, explained, “What you buy is not the banana itself but a certificate of authenticity granting the owner permission to recreate the artwork.”

The NFT parallel: Art meets digital ownership

For Sun, who founded the cryptocurrency platform TRON, the artwork’s resemblance to an NFT—a digital asset tied to authenticity and ownership—likely added to its appeal. He called it “a cultural phenomenon bridging art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community.”
Comedian first made waves at Art Basel Miami in 2019, where it was priced at $120,000. The banana-on-a-wall concept went viral, sparking global intrigue before the exhibit was removed due to overwhelming crowds. Today, it remains a symbol of modern art’s ability to spark debate and curiosity.

Maurizio Cattelan: The artist behind $6.2 million Comedian

Maurizio Cattelan, the creator of Comedian, is also known for his other provocative works like America (an 18-carat gold toilet) and La Nona Ora (a sculpture of Pope John Paul II struck by a meteorite). Cattelan continues to challenge traditional notions of art. Comedian disrupts ideas of value and permanence, encouraging viewers to reflect on art’s evolving role in an era dominated by viral trends and fleeting moments.
