Full time/Exempt/40 hours a week, Monday through Friday incorporating occasional evenings and weekends as needed. The Museum is an EOE.
The Director of Communications and Marketing is a senior-level leader who works to identify, strategize, develop, and implement a strong marketing and public relations program designed to reach existing and new audiences including those of various backgrounds. The Director is responsible for ensuring the successful promotion and branding of the Museum and its activities. This individual will play a key role in the Museum’s upcoming expansion efforts and will collaborate with leadership to create key messages, communicate vision, and underscore community support for a growing and vital community-centered institution. The Director will also work to strengthen the role of content as the Museum continues to expand its reach to national and international audiences and to build and sustain public interest, awareness, and support for its mission. This position requires 5+ years’ experience managing a fast paced and multi-layered communications and marketing program of similar size and goals. Position reports to the COO/Deputy Director.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Create a strategic vision for the communications and marketing department including annual marketing plan and monthly reporting.
- Lead the preparation, administration, and oversight of an annual marketing budget of $250 to $350K.
- Create and maintain strong communications standards and brand consistency.
- Develop and implement internal and external protocols and procedures to ensure timely and consistent communications.
- Effectively coordinate and implement marketing initiatives. Review and analyze the success of these initiatives through audience research, market research, and data analysis.
- Manage Google AdWords and evaluate related forms of digital analytics and reporting.
- Establish and maintain relationships with local, national, and international art critics, editors, feature writers, freelance writers, podcasters, and broadcast journalists for the purpose of developing extensive press coverage of Museum activities.
- Acts as official spokesperson in the absence of programmatic staff or in lieu of the CEO.
- Research, write and edit press releases and other resources needed for media outreach.
- Manage Digital Content strategy including online presence, website, and social media channels.
- Initiate, coordinate, and negotiate cross-promotions and other marketing initiatives with corporate, community, tourism, and cultural partners.
- Serves as consulting editor and occasional full editor of select publications.
- Oversee relationships with external contractors including public relations, marketing, and media buying agencies as well as website developers and other creatives hired to build resources for communications and marketing needs.
- Manages Multimedia Content Producer as well as interns and volunteers.
Requirements
Position requires excellent written and oral communications skills as well as strict attention to detail for all work. Candidate must have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines while meeting shifting demands and priorities. Must be a self-starter, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to recognize problems and find solutions. Experience in fields of art, museums, journalism, marketing, advertising, or communications a plus.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in liberal arts, museum studies, journalism, communications, or another related field.
- Established experience developing marketing and public relations strategy as well as identifying and managing content.
- Proven experience with audience development and dedication to the principles of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others including colleagues, internal and external creatives, and contractors.
- Ability to provide mentorship to team, colleagues interns and volunteers.
- Ability to balance several projects simultaneously as well as manage and complete projects on scheduled deadlines.
- Awareness and understanding of current issues and trends in contemporary design, technology, and the arts as well as social/political movements.
- Attention to detail, while able to think broadly and make connections about museum content.
- Strong writing and editing experience with the ability to maintain appropriate voice for different audiences and to write about art, history, and science in an intelligent but accessible way.
- Ability to use analytics to measure and evaluate multiple strategies and understands social media trends.
- Experience working with project management tools.
