East Dundee Arts Council announces art show winners

The East Dundee Arts Council held its first juried art show Saturday, Feb. 10, at Black & Gray Brewing Co. in East Dundee.

Thirty-seven artists submitted more than 100 pieces chosen to be in the show, according to the council’s Facebook page. Artwork was to be done in black and white and could feature a touch of red.

These are the winning juried entries:

Photography: 1st Place — Kate Norkus for “Milan Italy”; 2nd Place — Jason Nowitzki for “Monochrome Wingspan”; 3rd Place — Jeanne Garrett for “Lake Michigan.”

Fine Art: 1st Place — Tonna Holtz for “Fall into Me”; 2nd Place — Tonna Holtz for “Catharsis”; 3rd Place — Meradith Cunnally for “Self Portrait.”

The popular vote/people’s choice winners were Norkus for photography with “Milan Italy” and Tonna Holtz for fine art with “Catharsis.”

Works will on display at Black & Gray Brewing Co. for the next few weeks.

Carpentersville fire union selling St. Baldrick’s wear

Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790 is selling T-shirts and sweatshirts through Thursday, Feb. 15, in support of their St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser, which is being held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Randall Roadhouse, 2267 N. Randall Road.

At the fundraiser, participants have their heads shaved for pledges, with the money collected going toward research to find cures for childhood cancer.

Black History Month events at Elgin Community College

Elgin Community College is holding several events that are open to the public for Black History Month. They include:

  • Black Magic Poetry Slam from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Spartan Auditorium in Building B;
  • “African American History IS History: Black Influences in Art & Culture” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Building B, Room B180;
  • African Ball, featuring traditional food, dance and song, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the Jobe Lounge, Building B.

Elgin police hosting ‘Coffee with a Cop’ on Feb. 20

The Elgin Police Department will host “Coffee With A Cop” from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Jobe Lounge, Building B, on the Elgin Community College campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.

The public is welcome to stop by for free coffee and to informally talk with police officers about questions or concerns, according to Elgin Police Department social media news release.
