According to a new report by Platform X, published in accordance with the requirements of the European Union (Digital Services Act), the number of social network users in Europe has declined sharply, writes Politico.
X has lost 11 million users in Europe since August last year, with the largest drop recorded in France (2.7 million), Poland (1.8 million) and Germany (1.3 million).
X now has about 95 million users in Europe, down 10.5% from about 105 million last year. In some countries, the decline is even more significant: in Lithuania and Luxembourg, the number of users has fallen by a quarter.
Elon Musk acquired Twitter (later renamed X) in 2022. His decision to change the platform’s policies and openly support right-wing movements in both the US and Europe has sparked a wave of criticism, with many accusing X of fueling the spread of misinformation and hate speech.
Many well-known users have abandoned the platform, including author Stephen King, the University of Leeds, The Guardian newspaper, as well as the official account of the city of Paris, and many others.
The European Commission has been investigating whether X complies with EU rules on combating illegal content and fake news since 2023. The platform was accused of breaking the law in July but has not yet been punished.
Meanwhile, Musk’s other business, Tesla, is also struggling in Europe: sales of electric vehicles have fallen by more than 50% in the first two months of the year.
