Amritsar, March 7
The Indian Academy of Fine Arts (IAFA) opened an exhibition of 44 women artists from Amritsar and across Punjab to mark the International Women’s Day. The gallery is promoting women artists and their work as part of this year’s theme, ‘Invest in Women’.
The exhibition comprises works, including 39 paintings and five sculptures by women artists. The artists include an interesting mix of women, amateur artists as well as senior ones, with different genres on display. Art from genres including paintings, sculptures and digital with different hues and techniques has been presented through the works, connected through a theme of reflecting upon women empowerment and what it means to be a woman in today’s world. The exhibition was inaugurated by Tajinder Chhina and general secretary, IAFA, Dr PS Grover.
“The work of women artists often gets overshadowed due to limited opportunities and lack of an exclusive platform. The focus of IAFA is to bridge the gap between their home studios and galleries, besides giving them audience while promoting their art,” said Tejinder.
The gallery had also put up an exhibition of women artists from nine states under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Centre for Creative Arts, showcasing work that was as diverse as the country’s art culture. Dr Rohita, an artist who works in miniatures and is an educator at LPU, said more efforts are required to promote women artists so that they can financially sustain themselves.
