Kolkata: The Bengal CID announced plans to hire 32 computer science professionals to strengthen its cybercrime-fighting capabilities amid rising concerns over fake news and hate speech on social media. The decision comes following a surge in fake news and hate content on the internet related to the Murshidabad violence, Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Combined efforts by Bengal Police, Kolkata Police and CID identified more than 1,500 social media profiles responsible for spreading misinformation and hate content.The primary responsibilities of these analysts will include gathering electronic evidence, monitoring social media platforms for hate speech and fake news, and coordinating with social media administrators to expedite content removal when necessary. Besides gathering e-evidence, they will be tasked with tracking down hate speeches and fake news round-the-clock. They will follow up with concerned authorities to take them down in the quickest time. They will also work to maintain liaison with these social media administrators to help CID gather leads.Perhaps realising the mindset of the young generation, even the job advertisements have been put out on CID’s website for everyone to see. Applications will be accepted online from June 2 to July 1. According to the official notification posted on CID website, candidates must possess either a PGDCA, BSc in computer science, BCA, or DOEACC ‘A’ level course certification from recognised institutions. The selected analysts will be offered a monthly salary of Rs 21,000 on a temporary and contractual basis.The state CID earlier advertised for nine different posts of cyber forensics experts (CFEs) who will be domain experts in their own rights with actually no background whatsoever about traditional policing. Incidentally, this will also include crypto analysts.Though these will be contractual posts, the CID, claimed sources, was ready to offer a remuneration that matched the best in the industry. Cops claimed that the state probe agency already hired — or is in the process of hiring — two Cloud forensic experts, one crypto analyst, two disk forensic experts, two mobile forensic experts, one network forensic expert, and one malware forensic expert.The experts will be working in a modern cyber lab, first envisaged in 2017 when the agency decided to recruit 100 software engineers to detect and prevent the spread of rumours on social networking sites.
