FBI investigation underway at business in Coconut Grove

An FBI investigation was underway at an art gallery business in Coconut Grove on Wednesday.

FBI officials confirmed that they were conducting an investigation along Commodore Plaza, but gave no other details.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed multiple FBI agents at the scene with tents set up for them to work under.

Agents appeared to be focusing on Miami Fine Art Gallery, apparently packing away pieces of artwork at one point.

It’s unknown what the investigation was about but the gallery owner has a history of bankruptcy and complaints against him and his business, including some citing alleged fraudulent pieces of art.

One complaint against owner Leslie Roberts was by a client who claims he’s owed more than $447,000 after he purchased more than 30 works of art and only received three before allegedly finding out they were forgeries.

Other complaints claim buyers never received art pieces or were sold fraudulent items.

NBC6 reached out to the gallery and was waiting to hear back.

Nayib Ramirez, owner of nearby Loretta and the Butcher, said he doesn’t know the art gallery’s owner but hopes whatever happened can be resolved.

“What we hope to do, and what of the businesses I hope also do it, is do everything by the law. Do everything by the book,” Ramirez said.

No other details were immediately known.
