For the first time since the official charts were launched in 1952, female artists have spent more weeks at No 1 than their male counterparts.
Four of the year’s five biggest tracks in the UK were by women led by Miley Cyrus, whose song Flowers also topped the end-of-year chart and was one of 11 songs to accumulate more than 100 million audio and video streams in the UK during 2023.
Other female artists to top the UK singles chart during the year were Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift.
The annual breakdown of the year by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) showed there were 16 No 1 tracks; seven were by male singers or groups, spending 20 weeks on top of the charts,
