FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A teen is in custody after being accused of making threats toward a Pee Dee school, prompting an entire school district to go virtual.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office announced it arrested a 15-year-old from Scranton overnight in connection to the threats made against Lake City High School on social media.
These reported threats have students in Florence County School District 3 learning from home as the district announced an e-learning day for Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution” as authorities investigate.
The e-learning day announcement was made on the district’s Facebook page late Monday night, but the district first posted about the threats Monday morning.
FSD3 initially said it was aware of a social media post threatening secondary schools. Hours later, the district took to Facebook again to announce an arrest had been made in a different state.
The district said it looked like the threat was actually against a school in Lake City, Florida, and a 13-year-old from a county in the Sunshine State was in custody.
It is unclear if the arrest in Florida and the arrest in the Pee Dee are connected.
The Pee Dee teen arrested will be taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. Authorities did not detail the exact nature of the post the teen was arrested for.
